New Year Message
Dear Nigerian NPs/ NPs to be,
It is with great joy and optimism that I welcome you into 2018 as members of our noble association, the Nigerian Nurse Practitioners-Dallas Fort Worth (NANNPU-DFW), but more, as brothers and sisters in the profession. I must applaud every member for taking the courage to belong and I duly commend those who have in one way or another committed to the up running of our organization, either by taking offices, mentoring our students and others, attending our meetings and community activities, donating toward our cause, or/and others. Without you, NANNPU-DFW would not be, and I encourage you to be relentless, not because I asked you but because of what you believe in. To our committee leaders and members, I say thank you. I also encourage the many others among us to please find opportunities in our sub-groups and belong.
From the "Tale of NANNPU, 2016" we look back at our goals for 2017, the ones we met and the ones that either lingered or got postponed. As we look at these goals, I wish to remind us that I did not expect us to be error free and I did not expect that any errors would disable us. In most instances, we chose delays in order to arrive at thoughtful decisions rather than rushed decisions to arrive at failures. The following are our 2017goals and results:
v Announcing NANNPU-DFW Board Members – February Meeting
Goal achieved- thanks to the executives/gen house
v Obtaining a 501© status for NANNPU-DFW (Registration to be submitted before February meeting)
Goal achieved - thanks to the executives
v Building NANNPU-DFW website (IT/Social Media Committee overseeing): To discuss and conclude in Feb. meeting. Projected launching before April meeting
Goal achieved - Thanks to IT Committee and other
v Concluding and adopting all sections of NANNPU-dfw constitution by April 2017 meeting
Pending adoption: This is one area our leaders chose to be intuitive rather than structural. Our constitution has been completed and pending general house review and adoption. A copy will be available in our members-only section of our website for members' review. If you have not created your log-in information, please do so in order to contribute to the review. Adoption is expected during our next meeting and each member will receive and acknowledge receipt of a copy by February 2018 meeting. Thanks to our constitution committee and executive members.
Honorable members, as a new organization, we did great on our goals for 2017
Looking ahead to 2018
Given the structure of our entity, we have a corporate social responsibility to make decisions and take actions that will enhance the welfare and interests of our society as well as our organization and its members. In doing so, it is my intent to present to you the goals for NANNPU-DFW in 2018
We are all nurse practitioners, thus, we are professionals. Authority usually rests in the hierarchical top, but given our standards in our organization, I encourage members with the most expertise to assist where necessary. Such would enable our body to reach higher standards, and the greater we perform the more reputable entities we will attract to our group. As I said last year, our contributions epitomize the pluralistic state of NANNPU-DFW and such is the tactic our organization needs to vindicate the profession from being subservient to any other.
Generally, our organization has 85 registered members and ten functional committees, including the executive council and the board of directors. The ethics committee has not been busy because of the level of professionalism exhibited by our honorable members. We have not given them any issues to preside over. I must also commend our members for advocating and speaking up for our organization. Some have been confronted with derogatory statements of exhibiting superiority, and they handled them admirably. We have all been through these academic and other processes, or are going through them to achieve certain goals. In creating our organization, we are trying to use what we have to uplift others, to benefit our society, and to encourage ourselves without many distractions, and we can only achieve these in an association with persons who share not every goal but common goals in a profession. As the saying goes, the art of being wise is the art of knowing what to overlook", and I encourage us to continue to be wise in both our personal, professional, and organizational engagements. Many lack awareness and we will provide that during our Inaugural Ball.
Regarding a national body, since December 26, 2017, I have had two more contacts from two other states seeking for a chapter in their areas and I am very hopeful that NANNPU will start operations in 2018. More updates as they unfold.
On another note, we have had members in situations where I personally felt we could relate better, either at times of loss, illness, or other but I also believe that what might be ethically good might not be strategically worthy for our organizational structure, and I ask for your understanding. We will look into such matters after our inauguration.
Once again, our organization has done well so far and I pray for God's continued guidance. I welcome all our new members and congratulate our new graduates. For those who are still looking for jobs, do not be discouraged. You are too blessed to be distressed and too anointed to be disappointed . I pray you will claim your rightful job at this year beginning IJN, and I challenge our working members to help make this happen. To our students, I know you want to quit at times. Always keep a bottle of something aromatherapy nearby, and when it feels tough, rub a good amount in your palms and take deep breaths on it. The stress-relief type gets you smiling. If the NPs among us could do it, then, you can. Do not take your mind off your end goal. To my executive colleagues, you are awesome, and to our general members, do not stop being you. It is working.
Thank you for your continued support. Let us all engage and engender an inauguration to be treasured. In creating our mission and vision we define our organization but in reaching the goals we attain the realities. Our organization has been defined, we just need to attain the goals, and together we can. Looking forward to working with you in 2018.
God bless NANNPU-DFW!!
